LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - An honor has been bestowed on the Historic Water Street District in Henderson

The American Planning Association has named Water Street one of three Great Streets on APA’s annual Great Places in America list, which starts the countdown to National Community Planning Month in October.

“We are thrilled to receive this national planning designation, especially amidst the energy currently taking place on Water Street with the addition of the Vegas Golden Knights Practice Facility and multiple mixed-use developments like the South End on Water office and retail building, as well as the numerous food, beverage and entertainment options taking hold,” said Henderson Mayor Debra March. “It is not by mistake that the momentum and excitement around Water Street is bubbling over onto the national scale. Henderson is a thriving community today because of the visioning, sound planning practices and strategic investments that set the stage for our future. I couldn’t be happier to receive this honor, nor more proud of the City efforts that led us here such as the Southern Nevada Strong Regional Plan, Henderson Strong Comprehensive Plan and Economic Development Strategy, Downtown Masterplan and Downtown Investment Strategy, among other leveraged resources that laid the groundwork for our success.”

APA’s Great Places in America program recognizes the streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the United States demonstrating exceptional character, quality and planning —attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country. The Great Neighborhoods, Great Streets and Great Public Spaces of 2019 are places that are unique and exemplary in their success stories of revitalization, cultural identity and strong community connection.

Without many local businesses, retail, or restaurant options, Water Street once drew very little foot traffic to Downtown Henderson. With the introduction of the Downtown Investment Strategy in 2000, a plan was finally in place to start bringing life to the street. The momentum of Water Street’s transformation suffered a setback with the nationwide recession of 2007, but with political support from community leaders, a clear public vision, and a will to succeed, the City of Henderson made the rebirth of Water Street a top priority. In the past few years, Water Street has seen notable growth with the addition of a new local brewery, several bars and restaurants, a coffee shop, new office spaces, and future plans for residential units and a brand-new Henderson hockey facility.

The community will come together to celebrate Water Street’s designation as a Great Street in America by proclamation at City Council on Oct. 15, 2019.
