LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The City of Henderson will partner with Cox Communications over the next 12 months to build the Water Street Innovation District in downtown Henderson.

The Water Street Innovation District will serve as a hub to develop and pilot technology solutions that could eventually be deployed citywide. Planned technology projects include smart lighting controls for reduced energy use and maintenance costs; smart water meters for more efficient water use; solutions for improved parking and greater public safety during events; and the platform that will connect these systems.

“The Water Street Innovation District will create an exciting new environment that encourages citizen engagement and fosters innovation by drawing in local inventors and entrepreneurs,” said Henderson Mayor Debra March. “This transformative hub will drive economic vitality and test innovative technology solutions that will eventually be implemented throughout the community to improve the quality of life for our Henderson residents.”

“We are looking forward to getting this project underway,” said Derrick Hill, vice president, Cox Business Las Vegas. “Cox has long been invested in the growth and advancement of the Henderson area and we are proud to be playing a part in this next chapter for the city.”

In an agreement approved by Henderson City Council on Tuesday, Cox Communications Las Vegas, Inc., agreed to invest up to $500,000 in capital and operating expenses to develop, build, install and support smart solutions, including software development and integration, hardware and network service and support personnel. The City will reimburse Cox for 10% of their investment on a quarterly basis.

The City of Henderson adopted its "Smart City Strategy" in February of 2018 to provide a framework for investment in technology that would improve services for Henderson residents and businesses.

Henderson’s Smart City Strategy aligns with and supports goals identified in the Henderson Strong Comprehensive Plan for healthy, livable communities; a vibrant, resilient economy; and active, complete transportation.
