LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Two people were taken to the hospital after their northwest Las Vegas home caught fire just after noon Wednesday. One of the occupants could not escape on their own and had to be rescued by firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Three people were displaced by the fire.

Fire dispatchers received a frantic call from one of the occupants at 12:37 p.m. that their house at 6320 W. Tropical Pkwy. was on fire and one of the occupants was bedridden and unable to escape on the own.

When firefighters arrived on scene, heavy flames and smoke were showing from the rear of a large one story wood frame house. Firefighters entered the home and found it full of thick black smoke. This was not an option for bringing a victim out of the house. The bedridden elderly woman was in a bedroom on the front of the house. Through a window firefighters could see the room where the woman was did not have smoke in it because the bedroom door was closed.

Firefighters then broke out the window and decided to bring the woman out through the window away from the smoke. Several firefighters assisted bringing the woman out because of her condition and put her into an ambulance.

Because of her age and condition, paramedics advised family members the woman should go to the hospital to be checked out for minor smoke inhalation. She was transported to the University Medical Center Trauma Unit.

Another family member was taken a short time later because of apprehension and difficulty breathing. Both family members are expected to be treated and released.

Fire investigators determined the fire started on the outside rear patio. The fire broke out the patio sliding door and a rear kitchen window and extended into a family room and kitchen. That is when firefighters arrived on scene and stopped the fire from extending further into the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. A family member told investigators that they were cooking earlier on the patio. When they were done they went back into the house. A few hours later they smelled smoke and when they went to investigate, they found the patio on fire.

The patio area was gutted and back of house damaged. The great room and kitchen sustained moderate damage. The house had heavy black smoke damage. Damage was estimated at $80,000.

Three family members are displaced. They are staying with relatives that live next door.
