LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A new "flat rate" plan for taxicabs going to and from McCarran Airport to the Las Vegas Strip began on Friday.

The Taxicab Authority says it wanted to roll out the new program a bit early so any bugs could be worked out before larger conventions come to town in 2020.

The pilot program divides The Strip into 3 zones.

Zone 1 covers Las Vegas Boulevard between Sunset and Tropicana. Trips between McCarran and Zone 1 would cost $19.

Zone 2 covers Las Vegas Boulevard between Tropicana and Flamingo. Trips between McCarran and Zone 2 would cost $23.

Zone 3 covers Las Vegas Boulevard between Flamingo and Sahara. Trips between McCarran and Zone 3 would cost $27.

The Taxicab Authority says not only will it help cab companies compete with ride sharing options, but could end what's called "long hauling". That's where a driver, suspecting the riders don't know the area, take a longer route to the destination in order to collect a bigger fare.
