LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The Henderson City Council on Thursday shot down a petition that was protestesting use of taxpayer money to help fund the new Henderson Events Center.

The building is set to go up along Green Valley Parkway south of 215, on the site of the old Henderson Pavilion.

Organizers of the petition against the events center have said they're concerned about the crowds and noise the events center would bring. The building is set to be the new home of the Henderson Silver Knights, the top minor-league affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. Other events will be held there, as well.

The city council said that while the petition garnered more than the minimum number of signatures needed, it was invalidated because a Nevada statute says a description of the petition must be on every signature page, which it wasn’t.

The $80 million events center will be jointly funded by the Golden Knights and the City of Henderson, with completion due in a couple of years.

While the events center is being built, the Silver Knights will play their games at the Orleans Arena.
