New Jersey Sportsbooks Take In More Than Nevada In May

Sports Wagering Became Legal In NJ Last Year

LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Nevada is no longer the Sports Betting Capital Of The U.S. 

For a month, anyway.

New figures released on Thursday showed that sportsbooks in New jersey took in more than sportsbooks in Nevada. New Jersey books had a handle of just under $319 million in May, while books in Nevada took in just over $317 million.

It was just last year that the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, the federal statute that had restricted state-sponsored sports betting to primarily Nevada. Since that decision, seven other states in addition to nevada have begun accepting bets on sports

The majority of the New Jersey handle was taken in online. Unlike Nevada, those setting up an online account in new Jersey don't have to set foot in a casino to do so
