LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A new study from the financial website WalletHub shows that students in Nevada are among the least saddled by student loan debt in the country.

WalletHub surveyed all 50 states and the District of Columbia and found that Nevada ranks 44th when it comes to the total student debt load, but 48th in the nation when it came to the average amount of student debt.

Overall, South Dakota students had the most debt, followed by those in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Iowa.

States with the lowest overall student debt load were all in the West: Washington, Wyoming, California, Hawaii, and Utah.

While at the bottom of the list, Utah's average student debt was still quite high, at just under $19,000.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on 12 key measures of indebtedness and earning opportunities. The data set ranges from average student debt to unemployment rate among the population aged 25 to 34 to share of students with past-due loan balances.
