LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) -  A Henderson man accused in the fatal shooting of a 17 year-old boy near his home says he fired the fatal shots to protect his family.

That's according to the police report is the case of Edward Croaker. Croaker is charged with murder with a deadly weapon in the shooting death of Kory Lind near Sunset and Arroyo Grande last week.

Croaker says he was startled by the sound of gunshots coming from behind his house, and told investigators he thought the shots might have been coming from people that his son had had problems with. Croaker told investigators that his son had had issues with drugs and that the son's former dealers had "cartel links".

A second teenager with Lind at the time said that the two had fired several rounds from a gun that police later determined was stolen.

Croaker's next court appearance is scheduled for Monday. He's currently being held in the Henderson Detention Center on $150,000 bail
