LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - A Las Vegas Metro Police Officer remains Friday as he recovers from being shot Monday night on front of Circus Circus.

29-year-old Shay Miklanois, a four-year veteran of the department, was shot in the head as he was attempting to disperse a group of protesters that were throwing objects near Circus Circus.

The suspect in that shooting, 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego, made his first court appearance on Wednesday. The judge ordered him held without bail. He's due back in court Friday morning.

While doctors are encouraged by the successful surgery, they stress that Mikalonis has a long road to recovery ahead.
