HENDERSON, NV (KXNT) - The Henderson City Council on Tuesday gave unanimous approval to construction of a new ice arena that will be affiliated with the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights.

The city agreed to kick in just over $10 million for the facility, with the entire cost expected to be in the area of $25 million. The arena will be built at Water and Atlantic streets, site of the current Henderson Convention Center. It will resemble City National Arena next to Downtown Summerlin, but unlike City National, won't be holding any Golden Knights practices. Instead the facility will be hosting tournaments, lessons and youth camps.

At 104,000 square-feet, the facility will be home to two sheets of ice, plus a MacKenzie River Pizza restaurant, meeting and retail space

Even though the Golden Knights won't be practicing at the new facility, part of the agreement calls for two VGK player appearances annually, with the the team hosting at least six “play hockey for free” events and five official watch parties each year

The lease with the Golden Knights is scheduled to begin Aug. 1, 2020 and will last 20 years with the option of two more 10-year terms.
