LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Clark County officials are reporting the first death related to the flu for the 2019 flue season.

The identity of the person hasn't yet been released, but the Southern Nevada Health District is saying it's a senior citizen that passed away between October 27th and November 2nd.

Already this year, the health district says it has diagnosed 64 cases of flu, compared to just 12 at the same time in 2018.

Meanwhile, the Washoe County Health District says the unidentified patient contracted Influenza A and died between Sept. 29 and Oct. 26 of this year. A total of nine people were hospitalized with the flu in Washoe County over the same time period.

The district hasn’t released any other details about the fatality

Health officials are urging everyone to get the flu shot, and are reminding people that the shot takes about two weeks to full go into effect. Getting vaccinated can reduce the risk of contracting the flu by 40 to 60 percent.

Flu season usually peaks after the 1st of January.
