LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority will be able to buy the monorail.

Despite opposition from Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Clark County Commissioners Tuesday gave the go-ahead to the LVCVA to purchase the monorail for just over 24-million dollars. Goodman said she was totally opposed to it, mentioning that the city is nearly two-billion dollars in debt.

The monorail transports at least five million people every year on the near four-mile route from SAHARA to the MGM Grand, but is currently dormant due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The monorail has struggled to be profitable from its inception, but proponents say that could change if routes and stops are expanded.
