LAS VEGAS, NV (KXNT) - Work is already underway on the MSG Sphere entertainent venue that's going up east of the Venetian. Monday, the general contractor of the project was officially named, and they're no strangers to Las Vegas.

Los Angeles-based AECOM was named general contractor. AECOM's best known locally for building the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip. Other venues on the AECOM resume' include Mercedes Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The MSG Sphere is a partnership between the Madison Square Garden Group and Las Vegas Sands, and promises to be something the likes of which Las Vegas has yet to experience, with treats promised not only for the eyes and ears, but the nose as well. Las Vegas Sands is providing the land and MSG doing the design/build. Pedestrian bridges will connect the MSG Sphere to the Venetian and Palazzo hotels, as well as to the Sands Convention Center

The project is expected to employ over 3,000 construction workers, with close to 4,500 employed by the venue once it opens. It's hoped that the Sphere will be opened in time to ring in the New Year in 2020.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on the site back in September. AECOM has been on the project since February.
