CCSD Lays Off 170 Employees In Cost Cutting Move

All Deans Told They're Out Of Work, Could Re-Apply As Teachers

LAS VEGAS (KXNT)- Deans in the Clark County School District found out yesterday that they won't have a job to come back to once the 2019-2020 school year begins in August.

In a video released Monday, Clark County School Superintendant Jesus Jara said that 170 deans would be laid off to address a budget shortfall issue that emerged after the state's legislative session wrapped up last week.

Deans handle a variety of matters, including discipline, attendance and teacher evaluations, and comes at at time when a major issue that needs to be addresses issue is violence in schools, be it with students bringing guns to campus or fights breaking out among groups.

The union representing deans says they were blindsided by news, learning of it only after the release of the Jara video. The district says that the deans are welcome to apply for a vancant teaching poistion with the county, but that would mean taking a pay cut.
