CLARK COUNTY, NV (KXNT) - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), effective immediately, is closing Interstate 11 / U.S. Highway 93 at Mile Marker 2 in Boulder City southbound to Kingman, Arizona, due to heavy snowfall and a 22-mile vehicle back up. A suggested alternate route is U.S. Highway 95 to Interstate 40. NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures, and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.

Transportation officials are also warning drivers about possible black ice road conditions starting tonight, February 21, and continuing into tomorrow morning throughout Clark County, as temperatures dip below freezing.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm weather advisory through 4 a.m., February 22, for Clark County. Total snow accumulations of up to 7 inches are expected along the far western outskirts of the Las Vegas valley, with 1 to 3 inches across most of Clark county above 2,000 feet. Several inches are likely in the Mojave Preserve and on Interstate 15 near Mountain Pass and Halloran Summit.

Wet roads can quickly turn icy as temperatures drop. As such, NDOT urges motorists to budget additional travel time. Remain calm and avoid overreacting when encountering black ice. A general rule is to do as little as possible. Rather, allow the car to pass over the ice. Do not abruptly hit the brakes. In addition, try to keep the steering wheel straight. If the vehicle starts to fishtail, with the rear end sliding left or right, make a very gentle turn into the same direction. Drivers risk skidding or spinning out by struggling against it the turn or by abruptly steering in the opposite direction.
