LAS VEGAS (KXNT) - "The Main Event" is going to get valley drivers again this week.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will close Charleston Boulevard at Interstate 15 in downtown Las Vegas from 7 p.m., August 14, until 6 a.m., August 15, and again from 7 p.m., August 16, until 6 a.m., August 17. Also, the Interstate 15 southbound to Charleston Boulevard offramp will be closed during the same time frames.

The temporary closures are needed for freeway ramp construction as part of “The Main Event,” the third and final phase of work for Project Neon’s nearly $1 billion 4-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue. Project Neon is 76 percent finished and scheduled for substantial completion in the summer of 2019.

Motorists should use caution while traveling through the work zone, heed construction signage, and take alternate detour routes, if possible. Check the Project Neon website (NDOTProjectNeon.com) or Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages (@NDOTProjectNeon) for up to date information. There is also a free smartphone app available, plus a hotline available in both English and Spanish at 702-293-NEON (6366). NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures, and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors. For the latest state highway conditions, visit nvroads.com or call 511 before driving.

A huge closure is expected for Wednesday in Las Vegas. Transportation workers will close northbound Interstate 15 between Spring Mountain Road and Sahara Avenue from 11 p.m., August 15, until 5 a.m., August 16, in downtown Las Vegas. Additional ramp closures include the following:

The west and eastbound Spring Mountain Road onramp to Interstate 15 northbound will be closed from 9 p.m., August 15, until 6 a.m., August 16.

The Flamingo Road onramp to Interstate 15 northbound will also be closed from 9 p.m., August 15, until 6 a.m., August 16.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to use the Waze app and take alternate routes, including U.S. Highway 95 and the 215 Beltway. The temporary closures are needed to install overhead s Active Traffic Management sign as part of “The Main Event,” the third and final phase of work for Project Neon’s nearly $1 billion 4-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue. Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. is the design-build general contractor, with Atkins North America as lead designer. Project Neon is 76 percent finished and scheduled for substantial completion in the summer of 2019.

NDOT will also close U.S. Highway 93 at Interstate 15 (near Apex Industrial Park) from 7 p.m., August 13, until 7 a.m., August 14, and again from 7 p.m., August 14, until 7 a.m., August 15, in Clark County. However, all Interstate 15 ramps and lanes will remain open.

This overnight night closure is needed for bridge grouting as part of a new $58 million Interstate 15 U.S. Highway 93 Garnet interchange that broke ground earlier this year.

Plans call for building a modified diverging diamond interchange, plus widening U.S. Highway 93 from a two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway for five miles from the new Garnet Interchange to just north of Apex Power Parkway, among other improvements. The project should reach substantial completion by December.
