"The Main Event" Will Have Charleston Blvd. Closed At I-15

Closures Expected To Begin Early Tuesday Evening

June 19, 2018 - 2:34 pm

LAS VEGAS (KXNT) - The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will close east and westbound Charleston Boulevard at Interstate 15 in downtown Las Vegas from 7 p.m., June 19, until 6 a.m., June 20, and again from 7 p.m., June 20, until 6 a.m., June 21. The temporary closures are needed for bridge construction as part of “The Main Event,” the third and final phase of work for Project Neon’s nearly $1 billion 4-mile-long widening of Interstate 15 from the U.S. 95 interchange to Sahara Avenue. Project Neon is nearly 70 percent finished with over 1 million manhours of work recorded thus far.

Construction crews will place 9 bridge girders tomorrow night, each 115 feet (longer than a basketball court) and weighing 160,000 pounds apiece, or about 12 times heavier than an elephant. On Wednesday night, crews will place the bridge deck panels. (Girders are structural bridge members, like floor joists, which are used to frame and span an open space and transfer loads to the vertical members or supporting columns. Decking is the bridge surface that covers the girders like subflooring).

The project remains on budget and on scheduled for an anticipated completion in the summer of 2019.

Motorists should use caution while traveling through the work zone, heed construction signage, and take alternate detour routes, if possible. Check the Project Neon website (NDOTProjectNeon.com) or Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages (@NDOTProjectNeon) for up to date information. There is also a free smart phone app available, plus a hotline available in both English and Spanish at: 702-293-NEON (6366). NDOT works with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but unscheduled construction changes, closures and restrictions are possible due to weather or other factors.
