LAS VEGAS (KXNT) - We've waited for a long time for this, and it's finally here. The grand opening of a new Interstate in Southern Nevada.

A grand opening celebration for the first leg of Interstate 11 (I-11), a new interstate highway that will improve travel, safety and commerce between Nevada and Arizona, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, at the highway’s Scenic Overlook of Lake Mead.

Currently, Las Vegas and Phoenix are the only two cities in the nation with populations of more than 1 million residents not linked by an interstate. The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) led the effort to complete I-11 from I-515 to US-93 near the new Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge.

NDOT managed the construction of 2.5 miles of the project, which recently opened, and the RTC oversaw the 12.5-mile phase. This event will celebrate the opening of the entire 15-mile highway, which began construction in 2015. Eventually, I-11 will connect the western region of the United States with Mexico and Canada.

State officials are supposed to be in Nevada for the grand opening ceremonies, including The Federal Highway Administration Director of Field Services West Peter Osborn, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, U.S. Senator Dean Heller, Congresswoman Dina Titus, Congressman Ruben Kihuen, Nevada State Senator Joe Hardy, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson,  Clark County Commissioner and RTC Chairman Larry Brown, Boulder City Mayor and RTC board member Rod Woodbury, Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce President Mary Beth Sewald.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 9 at 11 a.m.; with a suggested arrival time at 10:30 a.m. It will be held at the I-11 Scenic Overlook.

If you're not familiar with the area, here are some directions: Take the bridge to Boulder City from US-95/US-93 on the right. Exit US-95 south towards Searchlight. Turn right at exit. Turn left onto I-11 on-ramp. Please note that you will be driving approximately 10 miles of I-11 from the on-ramp to the scenic overlook where the event will be held. Please plan for an additional 10-15 minutes to reach the event site.
