County Commissioner Celebrating Great Child Readers

Local Reading Competition Rewards Elementary Students

LAS VEGAS (KXNT) - Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick is hosting an ice cream party for students at Helen Herr Elementary School who won a reading month competition by reading more than 294,000 pages in March.

"Reading is the foundation of all learning," Commissioner Kirkpatrick said. "I am excited to celebrate our young readers, and emphasize to them and everyone else the importance of being a lifelong reader," Kirkpatrick said.

The ice cream party will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 7, at Herr Elementary School which is at 6475 Eagle Creek Lane, Las Vegas. 

In addition to Herr Elementary, the others participating in the reading competition were the Zel and Mary Lowman, Ernest J. May, Jesse D. Scott, and Eva M. Wolfe elementary schools.

For the ice cream party, Commissioner Kirkpatrick will be joined by Mojave Max and Tommy the Turtle, as well as representatives from the Las Vegas Police Protective Association and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Northeast Area Command.
