LAS VEGAS (KXNT) - Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones will join the county’s Parks and Recreation Department and community partners to celebrate the grand re-opening of Peace Park in Sandy Valley, Nev., on Saturday, May 11. The event starts with a 9 a.m. ceremony, followed by a bike rodeo and barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m.

Peace Park, located at 650 W. Quartz Ave. in Sandy Valley, was closed in the fall of 2018 for renovations. The $2.7 million project included the construction of a paved ½ mile loop trail, new landscaping and trail lighting, a Western and desert-themed splash pad, and upgrades to the water and irrigation system that serves the park, its baseball field, and the nearby community center, fire station, senior center, and library. Sandy Valley is located about one hour southwest of Las Vegas in Clark County Commission District F and has a population of about 2,000 residents.

“Peace Park is located in the heart of Sandy Valley, and the community was actively involved in the planning process for adding improvements and upgrades to the park,” said Commissioner Jones, who represents the area. “The splash pad has some great design elements that were selected by the community. We also are very happy to add a new paved trail for residents to enjoy.”

Kids age 5 to 15 are invited to take part in the bike rodeo event on May 11. Anyone who doesn’t have a bicycle can borrow one from Break Away Cycling, which plans to have 200 bikes on hand for the event.

Most roads in Sandy Valley are gravel so the addition of the paved trail is expected to be a popular amenity for walkers and bicyclists, and it also gives youth a safe area to ride skateboards and scooters. The splash pad features several design elements that shoot water including a snake, rock formation, cactus, hitching post, barrel, and lasso.

Hotdogs and snacks will be available during the lunchtime barbecue while supplies last.
