AP Newsbreak: DNC, TV Networks Discuss Presidential Debates

CHICAGO (AP) — The Democratic Party is talking to television networks about a series of presidential primary debates in 2019.

It's an early start to the process, but party officials say it's part of their emphasis on ensuring the 2020 presidential nominating process is viewed as being fair for all candidates.

Some activists who supported Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016 accused the Democratic National Committee of favoring Hillary Clinton with a light debate schedule and undesirable TV time slots for the debates.

This time, the Democratic field is expected to include many more candidates.

Party officials will have tough decisions about how many candidates to include in debates and what qualifications to use in selecting them.

Those decisions will be critical for candidates who could benefit from the exposure from TV debates.
